In this post, we are going to give you some ideas on how to set the Christmas table and what elements you should be using as decorations. Take note and get all the things before it’s too late!
What can't be missing on the Christmas table?
At Christmas, it is not enough to put the usual crockery and cutlery on the table. It is a special moment and you need your table to look its best to surprise your loved ones. As with any type of decoration, less is more. Bear in mind that, at Christmas, there are usually more dishes than at other lunches and dinners, so it is not a good idea to overload the table with extra elements. Choose very well and prepare the best Christmas decorations. These are our must-haves for Christmas Eve dinner and for alle the Christmas lunches:
Tablecloth and napkins, the touch of distinction.
The use of a tablecloth at any event is essential, because it elegantly dresses up your table. But it is important to think first about what type of tablecloth to use, because depending on the colours and design, it will influence the decoration. If you want a traditional Christmas styled tablecloth, we recommend you to use red and gold tones, because they look especially nice and add a table runner on top of the tablecloth. The table runner is red, so the tablecloth would need to be gold, for example, so it would stand out much more.
If you prefer a less traditional and more modern style, you can choose brighter colours, although we especially recommend light tones such as: white, cream or silver-coloured. This type of colour allows you to play with other decorative elements on it, because they are more highlighted. Napkins are another point to take into account on the Christmas table. Choose cloth napkins for all the guests, so that none of them are different. They can match the tablecloth or go for colours that combine with the tablecloth or with more Christmas designs. The placement of this is a confrontation between protocol experts, as they do not agree. We recommend placing it on top of the plate, as a decorative element. The fold, depending on how creative you are, you can make it in many shapes: triangle, tree-shaped, pocket-shaped... If you find it difficult to make the shapes, you can choose to buy round napkin rings. This way the difficulty will be less, but the result will be just as original and beautiful.
Cutlery and crockery, better if they are personalised
On special occasions, you tend to choose more special tableware and cutlery, and Christmas is a good time to do this. Get out the traditional family crockery or one that is more elegant for the occasion. If you want to make it more special, we recommend personalised crockery, which allows you to take much more care of the details. Imagine how surprised they will be if this Christmas they find a dinner service designed by you: you can put the family crest, a beautiful design, the name of your family... These are the little details that make all the difference when it comes to setting the table. Just like the crockery, the cutlery is also of special importance.
For these occasions, especially, traditional silver cutlery is usually chosen, which replaces the cutlery you use the rest of the year. However, another way to do it differently is to create cutlery sets for each member of your family. You can make the same design for everyone or choose to make each set personalised, designed exclusively by and for that person. It will be a great surprise if you opt for the latter option, because the guests will see that you have taken the trouble to come up with a different design and put everyone's name on it. The placement of the cutlery on the table is also important. Forks are always placed to the left of the plate, except for the cake fork, which is placed on top next to the dessert spoon. The knife and spoon are placed on the right, in that order. This is the most basic placement, if you add more forks or spoons, they also have a set order. Meat forks and knives are the closest to the plate. In such a way that the cutlery used for fish would be in second position, further away from the plate.
Decorative elements, why not?
We have already seen that decorating the table goes beyond the food. Add candles or a decorative Christmas centrepiece on the table. These are typical decorative elements at Christmas dinners, but you can also innovate. You can put small loose pinecones on the table; confetti, with a festive motif; dried flowers or Christmas figurines. It's about doing more than just putting plates and food on the table. By choosing a good decoration, your guests will be more surprised and will love it. Think about how you can make it different and how you can always find the right balance so that your table is not overloaded.
